David JacksonI am a Veteran.

of Mayflower, AR

May 14, 1941 - May 16, 2015

David L. Jackson, 74, passed away at his home in Mayflower on Saturday, May 16, 2015. He was born on May 14, 1941 in Quitman, Arkansas.

David was a graduate of Conway High School where he was a member of the Spanish Club and the High School Marching Band. He also was a member of the Arkansas National Guard. After some studies at Arkansas State Teachers College, David pursued his license in Cosmetology, which led to a long and successful career in Los Angeles and North Little Rock, where he opened his own salon in Park Hill. David was talented in many areas of the arts, including his special gift as a pianist. He held dear to his heart a passion for Mexico and the culture of its people, where he often traveled. He especially loved visiting small villages where he made many friends and taught English to the local residents while furthering his study of Spanish.

This caring and loving son, brother, uncle and friend, was preceded in death by his parents Oliver Wendell Tackett and Beatrice Christine Gunn Tackett and his brothers, Truman Gunn Jackson and Gary Wendell Tackett.

He leaves to cherish his memory a sister, Sarah Tackett of Scott, Arkansas; sister-in-law, Carolyn ''Ag'' Jackson of Fairbanks, Alaska; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and longtime clients he considered family; and as his special friends Mike and Nancy Lanford of Mayflower.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, May 21, 2015 at 3:00pm in the Roller-McNutt Funeral Home Chapel in Conway. The visitation will be held at 2:00pm, prior to the service.

David and I cut hair together in Manhattan Beach, California. We worked at a salon named Nicole's. David was a nice and friendly person. We both left California the same year. I moved to Oklahoma in 1979 and David moved to Arkansas. We would talk by phone a lot and he always sent me a letter at Christmas. Once I did go over to Arkansas with another friend who was visiting me from California. He gave me a perm that day. When I could not get ahold of David, and he wouldn't answer on Facebook I wondered what happened. I just figured he had gone ahead and moved to Mexico. He loved Mexico and its people. He would go down and teach English. I knew it was odd that he didn't tell me when he left. So yesterday again, I put his name in the Facebook search engine and one of his friends had put up a message that David had passed away. I don't think he was sick, it must have been sudden because I knew he would have had time to tell me. I hope he didn't suffer. It was such a shock last night when I went to his Facebook page and saw that he had passed. I hope he suffer, and feel like he didn't. RIP: dear David.

Here it is, after Christmas, and I just heard about David. I had emailed him several times and received no answer and had a funny feeling something was wrong. I am just devastated and have such a sick feeling inside of me. David was my hairdresser when he was in Manhattan Beach, Ca. in the early 1970's, and we have kept in touch with each other all these years. It is such a terrible lose. He always kept me informed of his family and his sister and I have felt like I have known them all these years. If there is anyone that could email me as to just what happened to David I would be most grateful. He mentioned no illness the last time I talked with him. I will miss him terribly. My email is h2anb@earthlink.net. My love to his family and friends who I know will also miss him dearly.

I, like everyone else, was deeply shocked and saddened by the news of David's passing. Many years ago (20?), my co-workers at Arkla suggested I make a hair appt with David and I did...after that, he was my stylist and friend until I moved to Pensacola 4 years ago. But, we remained friends and regularly stayed in touch via e-mail. He was a lovely man in so many ways and held a special place in my heart. I looked forward to my appts where we would talk about his trips to Mexico and the next project he was starting on his lakeside home. He also was a man of many talents and I admired his tenacity, patience and artistry at transforming his Quapaw Tower home and Lake Conway home to exactly what he wanted them to be. I will miss David very much. The beaches of Heaven certainly have a special place in the sand for him!!

Uncle David, I'm still kinda numb with the news of your passing. We haven't even emailed each other in 3 months. I was really glad to hear your voice answer your cell after the storms. I'll regret lost opportunities I'll never have again but I'm sure your gentle soul is with Christ, memaw, papaw and dad. I've been enjoying a lifetime of memories the last few days. From your corvette, to hanging out in LA. Still looking for answers I'll probably never have. Lots of love to you. Jeff

David was next door neighbor to my parents for years. He always had a friendly wave and a smile when I would see him when visiting my parents, of whom have both passed. With loosing my mom in Dec. 2014. David was very compassionate and would often ask how Mom was doing and made sure she had his phone number to call if she needed anything. I hope David and my parents are neighbors in Heaven also! If you need anything please don't hesitate to contact me. I am sorry for your loss - he will be missed!

I wish I'd known David longer. I wish I'd seen him one last time. But, I'm grateful I got to meet him and he worked his magic on my hair. He was a neat man of his generation because he was very open-minded. He was loving and gentle. He wasn't easily fazed and was always happy to share stories about his travels to Mexico. I'm really glad I got to cross the path of such a lovely gentleman.

What a great person David Jackson was. So many of my firends and co-workers went to David to get their hair cut and loved him so. They told me I should make an appointment with him and I did, over 30 years ago and made a friend in the process. David was so much fun and we had great times with him in and out of the shop. He was also a neighbor for several years when he lived in LR at Quapaw Tower.

Peggy, Penny, Judy, Diane and I all loved you and treasured your friendship and are richer for having you in our life..

David was like an older brother to me when I was very young. He was always in my life from the time I was a toddler and throughout most of my yound and middle adulthood. I did not see him as often these last few years but still kept in touch. He was also a great friend to both of my Parents and my Brother. I will miss him.

After high school and returning to Arkansas, I discovered David had opened his hair styling shop across from Park Hill Elementary School on JFK. We got reacquainted during time spent chatting while he expertly cut hair for my girls and me. He kept me informed of the doings of the Class of 59, bring me up to date on the reunions and activities of everyone he met there. After he moved to Mayflower, we continued to talk through FaceBook. He revealed his love of IslaHolbox, the small village he visited in Mexico, saying:

"I discovered IslaHolbox from a guide book many years ago, I was in Mexico and reading the book and saw about three lines on the island. It said no hotels but a few cabanas, no banks, and one restaurant and really nothing to do so I thought it was a place I wanted to see and loved it. Now there are a few resorts, many restaurants, a few bars and even an ATM. Still streets of sand and a quiet place to just relax and enjoy the beautiful beaches and millions of stars at night. I have been all over the Yucatan Peninsula and enjoy the Mayan ruins as well as the museums, old colonial towns and the wonderful colorful people who live there. So much history. If you have not been to this part of Mexico its worth the effort."

After the tornado hit Mayflower he wrote:

"I did get hit and have lots of damage to the house. Houses across the lake were all leveled, one burned and two deaths so I'm fine. Had no cell service for two days and water was restored yesterday and electricity today. Insurance man coming tomorrow so I will go from there. Just thankful to be alive. Never heard a sound so bad and have never been so scared. Time to move on and get things done and I will be just fine."

And now you have moved on and I know you will be just fine. And maybe one day we can make it to IslaHolbox and enjoy the beautiful beaches and millions of stars at night and reminisce.
