Evelyn Sue Vandagriff

of North Little Rock, AR

May 9, 1930 - March 2, 2015

On March 2, 2015, Evelyn Sue Chapman Vandagriff left this world for eternal rest in her Lord's arms. She entered this world on May 9, 1930 during the Great Depression at Hardy, Arkansas to parents Theodore Hayes Chapman and Mabel Garner Chapman . Her elder brother, Teddy Chapman predeceased her early in life. Sue grew up in a learn-to-make-do world loving family, friends, the Spring River and folk music. She took the lessons in creativity borne of economic hardship and applied them to a world of rapidly advancing technology. From her early days in Hardy, she is survived by her elder sister Imogene Chapman Hammerschmidt and life-long friend Norma Sue Carter.
Sue Chapman married Ralph Lloyd Vandagriff on August 15, 1953, and celebrated her 60th wedding anniversary in 2013 with her surviving spouse of sixty-one years. Sue gave birth to two surviving children, Pamela Sue Vandagriff Staggs and Ralph T. (Ted) Vandagriff. She instilled creativity into her children with a smile, a story, a song and a secret recipe for every season. Sundays were always special and consisted of Church, Sunday dinner, Dallas Cowboys football and Sunday night television. She loved to watch the Waltons on Thursday nights with popcorn and cokes. After raising her children she worked at the Bamboo Tree in Lakewood Village and Dillards in McCain Mall selling fine porcelain in a social and economic atmosphere far removed from the Depression era values of her youth.
Late in life she enjoyed Church food fellowships, and holiday meals with her surviving granddaughters, Sarah K. Vandagriff and Staci R. Vandagriff. She became an avid fan of author John Grisham and other contemporary novels graciously loaned by the William F. Layman Library. She loved Arkansas Razorback sports with an audible passion. She is also survived by one nephew, Bob Hammerschmidt, and two nieces, Beth Hammerschmidt Nixon and Susan Hammerschmidt.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:00 P.M., Friday, March 6, 2015 at Roller-Owens Funeral Home, 5509 John F. Kennedy Blvd., North Little Rock, Arkansas (501-791-7400). Funeral service will be at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, March 7th, at Hardy Church of Christ in Hardy, with burial following at Baker Cemetery, Hardy, Arkansas. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church.

Dear Family and Friends,

I'm sorry for your loss. I just wanted to leave you with an encouraging scripture that has helped me deal with the loss of a loved one. It is found in the Bible Book of Acts 24:15 and it reads, "And I have hope toward God, which hope these men also look forward to, that there is going to be a resurrection of both the righteous and the unrighteous."
