Olive Lord McMillan

of Little Rock, AR

April 5, 1921 - September 25, 2014

Olive Lord McMillan of Little Rock, AR, widow of Archie Y. McMillan, died September 25, 2014 in Little Rock. She was born in Chicago, IL on April 5, 1921 to Joseph H. Lord, Jr. and Willie Mae Byrd Lord and grew up in Sarasota, FL.

She earned a Bachelor's of Music Education Degree with minor in Spanish from Stetson University, DeLand, FL. She retired from Arkansas Social Services. She was a member of Little Rock Calvary Baptist Church, National Societies Colonial Dames 17th Century (Henri de Tonti Chapter), and Daughters of the American Revolution (Gilbert Marshall Chapter).

Survivors are daughter, Dianne L. Smith of Tulsa, OK; son, Brian L. McMillan and his wife, Marianne, of Little Rock; son, David B. McMillan and his wife, Nancy; grandson, Brett and his wife, Lillie; grandson, Nicholas; and great-granddaughter, Brooklyn, all of Fort Smith, AR.

Our Mother wrote this obituary herself in 2001, and her family updated it. Her family also added the following: Our Mother also taught Spanish at Hall High School. It would have been difficult for our father to carry on his music ministry at Little Rock Second Baptist Church without her assisting him by leading the Children's Choirs. She was a member of the Adult Choir and of the Cantorias. She played the flute and taught piano lessons. Daughter-in-law Nancy shared this memory, ''One of the darling things that I remember is her saying, 'Ain't nature grand?' Olive was delighted by travel and in awe of the natural beauty of the earth God created (for her)''. Daughter Dianne remembers her saying things were ''more better,'' a phrase she learned from her step-father.

Her favorite hymn was ''Amazing Grace,'' which she sang almost every day until about a month before she died at Presbyterian Village in Little Rock, where she had lived since December 18, 2009.

Memorial service and burial in Manasota Memorial Park, Bradenton, FL will be on a later date. Arrangements are by Roller-Chenal Funeral Home 13801 Chenal Parkway, Little Rock, AR (501)224-8300.

I waited too long to send a message; it's now Nov. 1st, but just wanted to send my love to all of you as this chapter closes. You know how much I loved your mom and dad. Will always miss the impact they had in my life. I thank God for leading me to 2nd Baptist Church as a child and being led by such wonderful people.

Can't think of growing up without thinking about the McMillan family. This side of the circle of life is incredibly difficult for those of us left behind. Praise God for the promise of Heaven when we'll see all of our family again.
