Arlington "Bubba" Callaway MilfordI am a Veteran.

of Harrison, AR

January 25, 1945 - November 7, 2013

Please raise a glass of your best muscadine wine to the life of Arlington Callaway Milford, Jr. This is what you get when you go around singing "old dogs and children and watermelon wine" all the time. One of his last dreams was that he would be able to keep his sense of humor in his final days of life like his father had done many years before. And so, Mr. Funny Man, this one is for you and the smiles it generates for those who read it.

Born January 25, 1945, at University Hospital in Augusta, Georgia, he died in Harrison, on November 7, 2013. He was the only son of Arlington Callaway Milford, Sr. (deceased) and Eva Jeannette Sleister Milford (deceased). Given the distinguished name of "Arlington Callaway" but forever cursed by the name given to him by his two older sisters, Dorothy Milford Davis (deceased) and Janet Milford Childree, "Bubba". He grew up in poverty with hard working blue collar parents who taught him the importance and value of hard work.

Some time around 1966, Arlington became reacquainted with a tiny beauty named Lynda Ersin who was his first grade sweetheart. She won him over in first grade with candy and chewing gum from her Aunt Kate's general store. In 1967 he came home on leave from the United States Air Force to marry Lynda on her birthday (so he would have no excuse for forgetting their anniversary or her birthday). They had 46 wonderful adventure filled years together.

They were blessed with two wonderful children: David Callaway Milford (husband of Julie Whitlow Milford) and Amanda Leigh Milford Chitsey (wife of Blake Chitsey.) Family time was centered on long trips in the custom Chevy van and hot summer days picking vegetables out of the family garden and riding down dirt roads in his red, white and blue "dune buggy" which he built himself on a VW chassis. Bubba left no stone of childrearing unturned and he did not discriminate. He taught his son how to skin, gut and cook a bass in the microwave and his daughter how to change a flat tire. He even taught both children how to cook-rather kill, crawdads by boiling them in a paper cup over the campfire.

Bubba's ideal vacation was a trip to Pea Ridge or any other battlefield. You can just imagine how much the children loved those trips. He read everything ever published on all the wars especially the Civil War because of his family ties to heroes of that war. He was a member of Gen. J. O. Shelby Camp 1414, Sons of Confederate Veterans. He took his grandsons, David Tyler Milford and Alexander Reed Cato, to many Civil War Re-enactments. Arlington could out "politic" the best of them over coffee at Hardee's or McDonalds in Harrison and Evans, Georgia.

He and Lynda traveled to all 50 United States, the Canadian Provinces, and Mexico, from Prudhoe Bay to the southernmost point on the big island of Hawaii. Some of his adventures were hiking the entire Appalachian Trail with Lynda and running the New York Marathon (Lynda just watched.) While a member of Warren Baptist Church in Augusta, Georgia, he served on several mission trips to Quito, Ecuador and Mexico. He almost had to stay in Mexico because he neglected to take his passport.

He retired from Bell South, now called AT&T, in 2000 after 32 years of service. But his favorite job was driving a school bus for Columbia County Schools. He loved entertaining those children with his funny stories. And in the end, Bubba died dreaming vividly of his favorite things: school buses, the Civil War and his family.
His last four years were spent in the great state of Arkansas so he could spend time with his youngest grandchildren: Ruby Kate Chitsey, Oliver Maxwell Chitsey, and Maxmillian Wolfgang Chitsey. He was the best "hide and seeker" and best "tickle monster" west of the Mississippi. He and Lynda are members of Eagle Heights Baptist Church in Harrison.

Funeral service was Monday, November 11, 2013, at Eagle Heights Baptist Church with Brother Glenn Crenshaw officiating.

Visitation was Sunday, November 10, 2013, at Roller-Christeson Funeral Home.

Interment was in Maple Leaf Cemetery.

Lynda ,
We were so sad to read about Bubba's passing. I have missed seeing him in Wal-Mart and his wonderful humor. Terry and I have fond memories of the time we lived with you honeymooners in North Dakota. So young, so far from home but so happy to be with our men. Our love and prayers to you and your family. May God give you His peace and comfort.

It was with a sad heart that I read the beautifully written obituary of the handsome Arlington Milford, Jr. We offer up prayers of comfort for Linda, David, Mandy and indeed ALL of the Milford Family at this time of sorrow. Bubba and Linda were not only our neighbors on Hereford Farm Road, they were our high school contemporaries. Bubba was remarkable. I remember hearing him talk of "training" for the hike along the mountain trail and some of his other adventures.

We will pray that our Lord givse you comfort and peace as you go through these coming days. Love to all.

My prayers and condolences to the family. Bubba and I started school for Bellsouth in1969 and worked together for many years. I remember all the fun that we had in our friendship. Especially the times we would have fishing in his pond. He will be truly missed. May the blessings of the Lord be with the family.

Bubba was a young man I thought a lot of, a good friend, and one I know you, his family, are most proud of! I remember how he would use his time wisely, and when the rest of us were giggling, passing notes, or talking in study hall, he would get his homework done. One night when we were out, he was driving his family's car, and unlike so many of the young men who would speed, spin tires, and grind the gears, he slowly and almost lovingly changed the gears on the old car making sure he brought it home in the condition in which his dad had loaned it to him. Good memories of a good man! May God hold you all in His loving care, and may each of you join him in Glory in God's perfect time.

Lynda, David, Mandy and Granny,
I have sat for the last few days remembering some of the funny "fish" tales grandpa would tell us! He always knew when to be the voice of reason, when to remain silent and when you needed to smile or just when a fatherly hug would be the best medicine! Tyler and I will always remember At The Hop! I think he's probably upstairs with beautiful angel wings singing with the angels and if I know him like I think I do, he's got a guitar and strumming along while sitting in his rocking chair tapping his foot! One day we will all meet again and sing At The Hop and have a grand party! Thank you to all of you for allowing me to be a part of your family! I have been blessed by each one of you in a very special way! Please take care of each other, encourage each other and love each other with all you have!! Grandpa would want that for each of you right now especially!!!!!!!!!!! Tasia Conatser
