March 30, 1934 - June 22, 2012

Sullivan A. "Sully" Ligon, 78, of Helena, Arkansas, passed away Friday, June 22, 2012, at Helena. Mr. Ligon was born March 30, 1934, at Ebenezer, Arkansas, to the late William Fred Ligon, Sr. and the late Mary Ellen Ramey Ligon. During his lifetime, he was a faithful member and trustee of the First United Methodist Church where he also served on many church committees: President-Church Builders Sunday School Class, Finance Committee, Pastor Parrish Relation Committee, and Worship Committee. He also was a member of the Alpha Zeta Honorary Agriculture Fraternity and Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville and the Arkansas State Pesticide Board. After receiving two bachelor degrees in Agronomy and Animal Science, Sully was employed as a County Agent for Chicot, Desha, and Phillips counties, Helena Chemical Company, Delta Distributors, Drexel Chemical Company, and Goldkist Inc. Sully was a founding member of DeSoto School and served on the school board for many years. He was a member of The Gideons International and a Sergeant in the United States Army.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mrs. Mary Hartsell Ligon; son, Ramey Ligon of Helena; daughter, Dawn Richardson and husband, Dale, of Flower Mound, TX; grandson, Britt Sullivan Richardson of Flower Mound; sister, Fay Nell Bruton and husband, George, of Wilmington, North Carolina; and a brother-in-law, Jim Boedeker of Bentonville, Arkansas.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, William Fred Ligon, Jr.; and a sister, Mary Aileen Boedeker.
The various nicknames "Sully", "Doc", and "Uncle Doc" are all indicative of the special relationship that his extended family and friends had with him. He always enjoyed telling stories from his childhood and his past experiences and loved getting together with his family on holidays.
Services for Sully Ligon will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, June+ 26, 2012, at the First United Methodist Church of Helena. Visitation will be Monday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Roller-Citizens Funeral Home. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Park in West Helena. Reverend Wayne Jarvis and Reverand Mark Massey will officiate.

Mary, Ramey and Dawn,
I've spent time this morning remembering the fun
times we spent together. There were some we'll
never forget. Remember the time Pam was upset
about "doing" her hair? Well, she said, she'd just go
to Mr. Sully. He'd take care of that problem!! My thoughts and prayers are with each of you. May God
be with your entire family. With love, Pat

I was fortunate enough to have Sully as a dear and close friend for many years. We were members of Alpha Gamma Rho at The University of Arkansas and The Arkansas National Guard in Lake Village. During recent years, we have kept "in touch" by phone and I enjoyed each and every conversation we shared. I will greatly miss this wonderful man.

Dear Mary,
It is Sunday, June 24, 2012, at 4:35 p.m., and I have just sat down to check the Internet for news from Marvell, Monroe County, Jonesboro and all the other places I have lived since Watt divorced me. My heart is more broken than when I left Watt in 1992 and when I heard Watt had died in 2008. There was not a better man than Sully in my book. I shall remember the good times we had with Evelyn and Joe Elrod, Sarah and Oscar Bradshaw, Shirley and Eugene Young, you and Sully with our rotating "supper club" in the 1950s. The times we watched our children grow up, getting involved in working in the private schools and all the good memories. I shall never forget how Sully offered to stand up with me when he found out what Watt accused me of and why I was asked to leave our marriage. He was a gentleman, wit and storyteller as others have mentioned.
Oh, Mary, my heart is broken. I wish I could be there to tell him goodbye and let you, Dawn, Ramey and all the family know that you all are remembered. But I have the promise of seeing you all some day where there will be no more sorrow, pain, sadness and suffering. We will only have joy and peace in the presence of God.
I will never forget you,
Love
Libby
