I don't know if anyone will ever see this so long after his death, but I loved his letters to the editor and miss them so much that I googled him years later and found the obit. Al was a voice for reason and sanity that our state and country lacks so much right now. I wish I could have met him.

Janie, Buddy, Billy, Donnie, Andrew, and Savannah - I'm sorry that we won't be able to attend the funeral today, but I wanted to share how I am thinking today about your dad.
I will always be thankful for the hours and hours that Al spent driving the school bus all over the country so we (the students at our small school) could experience and accomplish the successes we had in sports.
As far as I'm concerned, he was as important a member of our team as anybody was.
He was always so kind to me, a gentle giant. In all the years I played sports, my father never attended any of my games, so I was always impressed that Al made it a point to be at all of the games we played so he could watch his kids play. Make no mistake, he knew his kids were the best players on the court, and he was a little arrogant of that fact - LOL.
I'm praying that today you will feel the love and support of friends and family, and it will give you the spiritual boost you need to move forward in your personal journey. Sincerely, Your friend, Lynn.

I did not have the opportunity to know Al until his later years. I knew his name because he signed his letters to the editor--letters on current issues that were so well thought out, forceful and convincing. I decided that I must meet this special man who wrote such weighty letters so I looked him up at one of his sculpture markets. He has been a good friend ever since. What a delightful man with so many stories to tell! Atheism, love of country music and political leanings were a few things that Al and I had in common. I didn't realize that Al had died until I saw his obituary in the paper and my heart was crushed. I will miss my friend so much and send wishes of peace and comfort to his family.
