Ella Youngblood Ward

of Jonesboro, AR

September 21, 1927 - March 28, 2015

Ella Ward, age 87, left this life on March 28, 2015. Throughout her life, Ella touched many lives with her letters, even combat troops in Europe during WWII. One of her pastors, Brother Beasley, had said that was her ministry.
Her writing would also serve her well when her husband passed away and left her with a widowed mother and a small child. In a move that was not that common at the time, Ella took her insurance and benefits and went to college and graduate school at Arkansas State and the University of Oklahoma. She graduated Magna cum laude.
Ella is survived by her daughter, Brenda Ward Baker, her sister, Lois Chlarson (John) and a special nephew, John Chlarson (Jenny).
Ella was predeceased by her parents, Thomas Henry Youngblood and Jenny Perry Youngblood, and her husband, Ruben Marvin Ward.

Brenda, my heart is saddened for you in the loss of your mother. I remember her very well from the 60's when you and I were in high school. She was always so sweet and kind. Love and hugs and prayers

We worked together at the ASU library and then stayed in touch over the years. Even in this time of sadness, memories of her make me smile. And what a lovely photograph.

Brenda, we are so sorry to hear of your mother's passing. While we never really got to know that extraordinary, smart, and beautiful lady, we feel very blessed to know the daughter with whom she shared those qualities. Please know that you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers.

Ella was a loyal and generous friend for nearly forty years. We shared hundreds of communications with each other over the years and many entertaining stories about our former colleagues and friends at the Dean B. Ellis Library on the Arkansas State University campus.
She wash a good-hearted individual and an exceptionally decent human being with an unfailingly liberal and positive outlook!

My Aunt Ella. One of my last blood relations. One of the few people left that knew me as a child. She was always very good to me. Before my late brother Mark and I were in kindergarten, GI Joes were a hot toy for our age group. My father called them "dolls" and didn't want us to have them. Aunt Ella found out and one day special delivery knocked and Mark and I had GI Joes and GI Joe gear. Not really different than playing with army men, toy soldiers, but we used to let our imaginations run wild for hours on end thanks to my Aunt Ella. She was also my first pen pal when I learned how to write, and would take time in her busy life to answer a little boy's letters. I grieve over losing her and for my widowed cousin, Brenda Baker, who will miss her mother greatly.
