of Kingston, AR

May 9, 1946 - July 31, 2018

Alfred Ball Carter, III was returned to God's care Tuesday, July 31, 2018. He was born on May 9, 1946, in Little Rock, Arkansas, to Irby Lindsey Carter and Alfred B (AB) Carter, II. Alf is preceded in death by his father, AB Carter II, and his mother Irby Lindsey Noble.

Alfred attended Hall High School where he played football and then attended Southwestern College, (now Rhodes) on a scholarship in Memphis. He completed his degree in advertising and marketing at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. He was a manager of Ozark Outdoor Supply, Arkansas' first outdoor store, in 1972. In 1975 he and his partner, Tim Olmstead, opened Ozark Mountain Sports, which was Fayetteville's first outdoor store. In his lifetime, Alfred attended Bob Culp Climbing School, Northwest Outward Bound, Rainier Mountaineering School and The International Alpine School in Colorado where he spent two weeks climbing with Jeff Lowe in Denali National Park, Alaska.

Alf loved the outdoors and has been hiking and rock climbing in Northwest Arkansas' Ozark Mountains for many years. He was the first to rock climb many of today's popular sites in Northwest Arkansas including Sam's Throne, Red Rock Point, Busby Hollow and Lick Hollow (Horseshoe Canyon) to name a few. He then built a vacation lodging business near the upper Buffalo National River, called AzaIea Falls Lodge, with his wife Kathy and continued to take visitors hiking and climbing for many years.

He is survived by his wife, Kathy Trimble; his brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Sally Carter; his nephews and their wives, Preston and Lauren Trimble and Chuck and Canie Carter; and his niece and her husband, Cary and Nick Collins.

I have just today by accident learned of Alf’s passing. I was a rock climbing partner of Alf’s in the early 70’s when ran Ozark Mountain Sport in Fayetteville. We ran a climbing school together out of that shop. And even did some stunt work for a movie starring Sandra Locke and Joe Don Baker. We made several climbing trips To Colorado during those years. Those were great times and I have very fond memories of him. I am very sorry hear of his passing and that we lost touch.

When Alf passed he left many happy memories with me spanning the years from childhood to times in San Francisco, Dallas, Houston and my many visits to north Arkansas. He was a great friend who taught me a lot and I'll be forever in his debt. Kathy, I'm so sorry for your loss. I know you were his one true love since high school and I'm so glad he was able to have you in his life for so long. He could never have been happy without you. I too will miss him very much.

Kathy and Bill so sorry to hear about Alf passing away. Alf and I took a break from college and wound up as cameramen for KATV. I have so many great memories of those days. Alf was the most genuine person I have ever known, what you see is what you got, and he was a great guy. Stayed in touch the last few years with Alf and a lot of our KATV alums. He will be missed and will keep the Carter family in my thoughts and prayers.
