Harlan Dale Sharp

of Harrison, AR

September 10, 1942 - June 18, 2018

Harlan Dale Sharp passed away Monday, June 18, 2018, from injuries sustained in a truck accident caused by heart failure. He was born September 10, 1942, in the White Oak community near Bergman, Arkansas, the son of Gabriel ''Gabe'' Bailey Sharp and Bessie Ivon (Vanzant) Sharp.

Harlan loved to be doing something, whether it was working on his farm tractors, working with his cattle, delivering containers or visiting with friends. He enjoyed elk hunting in Colorado for many years. He was plowing with a farm tractor by the time he was eight. When Harlan was 12, his father volunteered him to drive a 90 year old man to Fort Smith and the man then paid for Harlan's bus ticket home. When he was 14, his dad Gabe was in the hospital and he called a county official and told him his son needed his driver's license. Harlan's sister was able to go in with him while he took the test and she had the manual so they looked up the answers he didn't know.

Harlan graduated from Bergman High School in 1960. He worked in Grants, New Mexico as a loader operator for the Homestake-Sapien Uranium Mines during the summer of 1959 and after graduation until December 1960. Harlan married Nancy Lee Wilson, daughter of John and Irene Payne Wilson, on March 31, 1961. In January of 1962, they moved to Yakima, Washington where Harlan worked for Chuck Worthen and Paul Berndt on their orchards, remaining friends with them through the years. Harlan and Nancy attended Yakima Business College at night. Harlan was also saved and baptized while in Washington.

After returning to Arkansas near the end of 1966, Harlan managed a registered Black Angus ranch in Searcy County. In 1969, he went to work at Garrison Motor Freight. After it sold, he drove a truck for Chief Freight Lines out of Tulsa, Oklahoma for a few months. He and Harold Hicks then started Hicks and Sharp Trucking, Inc. Harlan later sold his share of the business and began driving for Wal-Mart in 1987, where he was known to other drivers as ''Scooby Doo'', retiring in 2007. In 1994, Harlan and Nancy started Dale's Storage Trailer Rental and Sales, Inc. Harlan served as a deacon at First Assembly of God Church for many years and also went on several mission trips to Indian Reservations in Arizona.

Harlan was a good mechanic and could do just about anything. He never met a stranger and was always willing to offer a helping hand. He was a very kind, considerate, and loving husband, father, and grandfather; a true provider and protector for his family.

Harlan is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Nancy Lee (Wilson) Sharp; his daughters and sons-in-law, Tina and Bryan McCain and Tiffany and Lance Nichols; two brothers, Larry Wilson and Gary Wilson; and two sisters, Dorothy Dees and JoAnn Brown.

He is also survived by five grandsons, Sharp Woolston, Jake Woolston and wife Anna, Jeremey McCain, Ty McCain and Breyden McCain; two great-granddaughters, Mabry McCain and Ribbon Woolston; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Harlan was preceded in death by his daughter, Neici (Paul) Woolston; his parents; his mother-in-law and father-in-law; four brothers, Maurce, Arlis, MD and Dillard Sharp; his sister, Marie See; and an infant sister.

Memorial service was 1:00 PM, Friday, June 22, 2018, at Roller-Christeson Funeral Home in Harrison, with Bob Meredith, Billy Edgar, and Lance Nichols officiating; with family visitation immediately following the service.

Honorary pallbearers were Harlan's sons-in-law, grandsons, great-granddaughters, Glen Sattler, Bill Phillips, Howard Moore, Bill Lovell, Rickey Vanzant, brothers-in-law, Johnny Rex Wilson and Donnie Lex Wilson, Wal-Mart driver and the Hearthstone Sunday school class.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Gideon's International, PO Box 997, Harrison, AR 72602 or the Harlan Sharp Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Anstaff Bank, 1106 Hwy. 65 North, Harrison, AR 72601.

I was so sorry to hear of Harlan's death. What a wonderful life he lived. My husband, Steve, thought the world of Harlan and appreciated the work that he did for Ozark Timber in years past. I pray that your family will be covered with God's peace and presence as you go through this time of mourning. He will be remembered fondly by all who knew him and enjoyed his smile and kind nature.

We are sorry to hear of Harlan's death and know he will be greatly missed by his family and friends. We know he is rejoicing in Heaven and looking upon the face of Jesus. What an honor that is. Nancy we remember when we first met you and Harlan at First Assembly. I think we were 19 and recently married. We visited a lot on Sundays after church and you both were such Christian examples to us. We were away from home and didn't know a lot of people up here but found very good friends in both of you. Harlan was a joy to be around and we will always remember him that way. May our wonderful God hold you in his big arms and comfort you and your family.

I’m so sorry for your loss. I remember when Harlan was working in Sunday School at First Assembly and told our class his baby, Tiffany had been born. He loved his wife and girls and his church family.

Harlon was a wonderful person! I first met him through Bill Lovell when I worked at Harrison Walmart. I was only in my 29’s back then . I worked st the Huntsville Walmart until retiring in June and it was not long ago I got to talk with Harlon . He never let me forget that I was the only person to hand him over $6000.00 in cash with out asking a question ! I guess that tells you how much I thought of him and trusted him! He came to the store and said we owed him for some trailer use so I ask how much and he told me. He went on through the store visiting and I went to find him and give him his money and well let’s just say he had a good laugh and I learned a good lesson!! Great man! He will truly be missed!
