August 8, 1932 - May 5, 2018

Samuel ''Sam'' Mathis Brooks, Jr., age 85, formerly of Little Rock, went home on Saturday, May 5, 2018, at Harrison Rehabilitation and Health Center in Harrison. He was born August 8, 1932, in Little Rock, the son of Samuel Mathis, Sr. and Edith Brooks. Sam was preceded in death by his parents, Mathis and Edith Brooks of Little Rock; and a nephew, Randy Brooks of Harrison.

Samuel graduated from Little Rock High School (now LR Central High School) in 1950. After graduation, he then joined the United States Marine Corps Reserves and was called into active duty in 1950 as a Radar Operator. After his service in the Marine Corps as a Corporal, he attended Arkansas State Teachers College in Conway (now University of Central Arkansas) and graduated with a degree in Education. His emphasis was in History and he taught that for many years in various high schools in Arkansas and Missouri. After his career in teaching, he became the night manager at St. Francis House in the Episcopal Diocese of Arkansas.

Sam's greatest joy was being with his family. He always loved visiting and spending time with his brother, Jerry, and his family. Sam and Jerry were extremely close and always enjoyed a little sports competition every now and then.

Sam is survived by his loving brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and Ada Brooks, of Harrison; his niece and nephew, Kim and Brent Rosson, of Harrison; three great-nephews and great-niece, Dr. Brent and Hannah Rosson of Harrison, Bryan Rosson of Harrison, and Brooks Rosson of Fayetteville.

Graveside service was Saturday, May 12, 2018, at Maple Leaf Cemetery with Mitchell Rains officiating. Viewing at Roller-Christeson Funeral Home was prior to the service.

Honorary pallbearers were Sam's nephews, Brent Rosson, Sr., Dr. Brent Rosson, Bryan Rosson, Brooks Rosson, the staff and friends at Hillcrest Home, Maple Esplanade and Harrison Rehabilitation and Health Center.
