Earl T. Meiers, 72, of West Fork, formerly of West Helena, Arkansas passed away Saturday, February 26, 2011 at his home in West Fork, Arkansas. Earl was born February 26, 1939 to the late Marion and Edna Jenkins Meiers.

Earl was a veteran of the West Helena Fire Department for 35 years and served as Fire Chief from January 7, 1977 until April 17, 1995. He retired April 17, 1995 due to a traffic accident received in the line of duty. He was a former board member of the Greenville Burn Center, Past President of the Arkansas Association of Fire Chiefs, past member of the Arkansas State Firefighters Association, past member of International Association of Fire Chiefs, past member of Southwest Division of Fire Chiefs Association, appointed October 25, 1985 by Governor Bill Clinton as a member of the Arkansas Fire Academy Board, and member of the Arkansas Municipal League. In 1995, Earl was inducted into the Arkansas Firefighters Hall of Fame. He also served in the Arkansas National Guard in 1956 as a Sergeant.

He is survived by one son, Shelby Meiers of Malvern, Arkansas; one daughter, Lauren Nix (Harvey) of West Fork, Arkansas; five grandchildren, Taylor Meiers Bateman (Randy), Ashley Nix, Avery Nix, Gentry Meiers, and Grace Wilson; three great-grandchildren, Riley, Madelyn, and Marisa Bateman; two brothers, Marion Meiers (Barbara) of Crossville, Tennessee and Louie Meiers of Helena.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 38 years, Anne Stallings Meiers; one grandchild, Haley Meiers; two sisters and one brother.

Funeral services for Earl Meiers will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 1, 2011 at the Twin City Church of Christ in West Helena. Brother Bobby Baker will officiate. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, West Helena. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Monday, February 28, 2011 at Roller-Citizens Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Travis Williams, Tommy Gatlin, Skeet Seaton, Troy Seaton, Clay Whaley, Pat Sensat, Kenny Fletcher, and Jody Warren.

Sorry to hear the sad news of the passing of Earl as a former friend, neighbor and fellow firefighter on the West Helena fire department and having served under the leadership of Earl as Chief was a Honor. I will always remember Earl for the honorable friend, neighbor, and fellow firefighter he was. My condolences to the his family who I know will also miss him.
