John served in the Army during World War II, spending 21 months in Europe. He was in England, France, Holland and Germany. When the war ended, he returned to Little Rock and took a civil service job where he met Lucy. After a brief courtship, they married, resigned their jobs and moved to Monticello for John to start college using the GI Bill. He transferred the next year to the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville and graduated with a BS in Agriculture in 1950.

John and Lucy spent the next 20 years in England, Arkansas, where he taught Veterans, High School Agri, and chemistry for 3 years. He then was promoted to be the Principal of England High School and he began working on his Masters Degree in Education Administration from U of A. He completed this degree in 1960. In 1970, John was promoted to Superintendent of the England School District. After 2 years, he accepted a job as supervisor of the Veterans Approving Agency in the State Dept of Education in Little Rock. He worked there until he retired in 1983.

John and Lucy moved from England to Conway in 1976. John loved having enough land for a big garden. He grew the best tomatoes and blackberries, which he loved to share with friends at Graham Chapel United Methodist Church down the road. Lucy passed away in 2012 and John spent these last 5 years helping and guiding family and friends. John spent many hours in daily prayer, Bible study, visiting and watching old movies.
