EDDIE RAY CAMPBELL, EDUCATOR AND MINISTER, DIES AT 85

Eddie Ray Campbell, 85, of Searcy was born September 8, 1931, in Roaring Springs, Texas to John Keithley and Vada Bearden Campbell, and was received Home by his Heavenly Father on December 15, 2016.

Eddie was a respected and cherished husband, father, grand and great grandfather, minister, school administrator and teacher, spiritual leader and friend to countless people. His decades-long career and life of service at many institutions began and culminated at Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas, where he served over four decades in the counseling department and as Dean of Men. Eddie also served as a minister in Florida, Georgia, Texas and most significantly at the Downtown Church of Christ in Searcy in the 50's 60's and as an Elder for 32 years thereafter.

Less known about Eddie was that he was a renaissance man, self-taught and proficient in five musical instruments, with a strong tenor voice, happily put to use at family, church and social gatherings. He built a unique 3,000 square foot home, with the occasional help of family members and friends. The son of a cotton farmer from West Texas, Eddie for years had his own extensive garden which he tended with his father's old tractor. He worked his way through college as a Bible salesman for the Southwestern Company, an oil rigger in the state of Maine, and a popular instructor for the Dale Carnegie Course.

Brother Campbell, now in the presence of God, pointed many toward Him in his life. A true shepherd and servant, his strong, gentle and steady spirit will be missed by all.

Preceded in death by his beloved wife and partner Kathryn, and eldest daughter Linda Kaye Garvey, Eddie is survived by their children, David Campbell of Nashville, Tennessee, his wife Donna and their daughters Reed and Haley; Danny Campbell of Chesterfield, Virginia, his wife Kim and their children Madison, Phoebe, Daniel, and Hannah; Julienne Campbell Young of Tonawanda, New York and her daughters Jimmie and Grace Kathryn, Earl, Eyrras, and Evander; and Mindy Sue Campbell of Searcy and her children Jason Tyrone, Jaidyn, and Makaelyn.

Memorial Services will be held 5 p.m. Saturday, January 7th in the Family Life Center at Downtown Church of Christ 900 Main Street, Searcy AR 72143.

Comfort to the Eddie Campbell family. As a student at Harding in the early 70's, I always enjoyed hearing brother Campbell speak in chapel, either a devotion or announcement. He ALWAYS was smiling. However, what impressed me the most was the impression he made upon my parents. At the end of my Junior year in 1971 I had an accident and was in the hospital at Little Rock for nearly 2 weeks. Of course my parents came to be by me for their 1st visit at Harding. Mr Campbell's care and concern was easily seen and greatly appreciated. My mother still remembers him.

Dear Campbell family,
What a blessing your family has been to thousands of people. Richard and I speak often of your parents and the influence that they had upon our lives. We were saddened at the passing of your mom and now your dad. We remember is fun personality and the smile on his face. He was even an influence on my oldest son when he lived in Searcy and attended the Downtown congregation. Both of our parents are deceased so we understand what this time of passing is for you. Oh, the fond memories of the times we shared in Dasher. God bless you and comfort you at this time. You are loved by us and in our thoughts and prayers.

Brother Campbell would drive from Searcy to serve as the preacher for some time in the little church I grew up in in Jackson County. He would often bring his children with him, I thought, so I could have someone my own age to play with. Years later as a college student, it was a delight to see him on the Harding campus.

Dear Campbell family, I remember Eddie always smiling and laughing. What a joy each of you must have been in his life, and we pray that all the very best memories of him will continue to bless you. May the God of peace guard your hearts and minds. Indeed, as my own dad was fond of quoting: "Precious in the sight of the Lord are the death of his saints." -Ron & Marty

Such a sweet man. Always had me laughing. It was a blessing to have known him even if such a short time.
