I met Charles, Labor Day week 1995 at the A.S.A. Men's class B fast pitch National Championship in Marietta, GA.
That, for me, was my first selection, as an umpire, to a National Championship.
Charles and I worked, along with another umpire, my first game.
He was a fine umpire, and meeting, and umpiring with Dr. Harlan was one of the highlights of my life.
I shall remember him fondly.
I wish many blessings to his family.

I was thinking about Charles today and, upon Googling his name, learned of his death. I am shocked and extremely saddened to hear of it. Charlie was my dear friend during residency at the University of Tennessee and helped me establish the medical examiner office in Williamson County, Tennessee. We remained friends throughout the years; I celebrated with him as he married Kay and suffered with him as he lovingly supported her through her illness. In my mind, Charlie Harlan was and remains a great man. Please accept my sympathy. Dr. and Mrs. James S. Kennedy, Smyrna, TN

I had the honor and privilege of working with Dr. Charles. I worked in the Radiology Dept. at General Hospital. Were it not for him, I would not have had the opportunity to learn Forensic Radiography.

He was a teacher and mentor. He had a quirky sense of humor and loved to tell jokes.

He left us too early and will be greatly missed by those who knew him, myself included.

I will always remember Dr. Harlan as the kindhearted giving person that he was. I worked for Dr. Harlan for 7 years and I can honestly say that to this day, I have never had someone to treat their employees the way he did. He cared for us like we were his family and never hesitated to be there when you needed him. My condolences go out to his family, and I will keep you in my prayers.

Dear Family and Friends,

I join with the past members of the Metropolitan Nashville Medical Examiners Office in offering our deepest sympathy in the loss of a kind spirit and giving heart.

Dr. Charles was the most kind and giving person we knew and we will never forget him and his ability to serve as a father, brother, or friend to his staff.

The knowledge he imparted to those in the field of Pathology started many on their lifelong careers.

We all knew him as a Christian...so we do not say goodbye....just so long for now, dear friend.

Laurie - Pam and I continue to pray for you and your family in this loss. May His peace sustain you and your memories give you solace as you begin your adjustment to this lifelong, but temporary separation. Thanks be to Jesus, who endured His separation from the Father and the cross to give us true freedom and hope for Heaven.
