Wilma Lee Hughes

of Searcy, AR

November 18, 1919 - August 3, 2013

Wilma Lee Hughes, 93, of Searcy, went to be with her Lord on Saturday, August 3, 2013. She was born Tuesday, November 18, 1919 in Searcy to the late James Ed and Irene Lisa Stroud Manning.

After graduating from Searcy High School in 1939, Wilma was encouraged by several Searcy businessmen to enroll in what is now Lyons College in Batesville. After completion of her education there she began her business career as a legal secretary for a Searcy attorney.

Wilma worked for several businessmen in Searcy and retired in 1986 after having served for many years in the White County Courthouse.

Wilma loved her family, especially her nephews and nieces and always enjoyed visiting with them.

After retiring from public service, Wilma stayed busy with several hobbies. One of her favorites was helping to organize and plan the annual Bell Family Reunion which was held every year in the Carmichael Center. She served as president of the planning committee for several years.

Wilma's husband, Curtis, was unable to work because of health problems for many years, so Wilma learned to operate their John Deere mowing tractor and she mowed their one-acre yard until she was 87. Her brother-in-law teased her about ''popping wheelies'' on that John Deere.

Wilma also enjoyed the Manning family reunions and held many of them in her home on Thanksgiving Day or Christmas Day.

Wilma and Curtis loved the mountains and took advantage of every opportunity to spend time there. One of her favorite pictures is a 16''x20'' picture of ''Mildred the Bear: on Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina.

Wilma will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Curtis Lester; and two sisters, Norma Jean Wilson (Bud) of North Little Rock and Daphna Darlene Hickman (James) of Hot Springs.

She is survived by two sisters, Ella Odean Hughes (Calvin) of Searcy and Jo Joyner (Jim) of Searcy and several nephews and nieces.

Visitation will be 2:00-3:00pm Tuesday, August 6, 2013 in the Roller-Daniel Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral services will follow at 3:00pm. Interment will be in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.

I'm sorry for your loss. Wilma was such a great person. I loved working with her at the Assessor's office. I know she is smiling while in a much better place.

From our family to yours,
"In themselves the days of our years are seventy years; and if because of special mightiness they are eighty years.."
For Ms. Hughes to have lived 93 years is truly a testimony of the blessing of "special mightiness" of GOD upon Wilma Lee Hughes. May your family take comfort in her memory.
