Sunday, I put my hand on his arm and said," Dad I just want you to have peace." He said, "I've been at peace (Jesus' Peace) for a long time." He said, "I just don't want to have to suffer." On that same day, mom informed me that she had forgotten to ask me to ask him his favorite hymns. Monday was his last doctor's appointment and that was the day that the doctor said that dad was pretty much in the same kind of shape that he had been on his very first visit. I In other words, there was nothing else that could be done. I remember speaking to my dad Monday evening (last time I talked with him). I asked him his favorite hymn. He said, "I have always wanted the song In the Garden sung at my funeral. We honored him with that song. I also knew that he wanted to be cremated (Genesis 3:19). During that same conversation I asked, "Dad have you thought about having your remains sprinkled on a football field?" I heard a smile in his voice when he said, "I never thought about that." He yelled for my mom and told her of the idea. I can't believe he yelled to her in the shape he was in to get her to immediately hear of the idea. Others have said that dad was a regular Speedy Gonzales on the football field, that he was small, but tough and very fast, and his friend Michael Lloyd said that Dad weighed around 118 pounds and Coach Moncrief tried to get dad to gain some weight so the scouts would become interested. After high school, dad joined the U.S. Army where he met my mother, whom he loved forever. I remember my dad being an imperfect, full of love, committed father/husband, a jokster, a silly song creator, and a father who would always be there for his children. He helped create a better life for his children. He reminded my brother and I of the challenges that he faced as a child. Once, in school, he ate the orange peel while the other boy ate the orange. He duct taped his shoes. He lived in AL in a barn on a dirt floor. As a child, I didn't want to hear these stories, but as an adult, I'm glad that he told me. I was in the family car with he and mom once. I couldn't have been no more than 5 years old. I asked, "Dad, what do you do?" He said, " I Build Skyscrapers." My mom giggled and put her hand over her mouth." I love you dad, forever. I'll see you when it's my turn to leave this world. I will join you in the happy place God has created called heaven. I will walk in the Garden with you and Jesus and all the ones who we have loved. You were there for us and loved us and for that I am grateful and couldn't have asked for anything more!

Love to you all from myself and Mother. I remember so much about our School Days and our growing families. Hershel was a good man. None of us had much that money could buy in those days. Hershel became a rich man being true to himself and caring for others. RIP Hershel. Polly and Charlene Gill.

I knew Herschel in our teenage years.Went to the Bassett Chirch of God with him and to school our senior year at Rivercrest. So I will always have a sweet memory of a really nice young man who caught game winning touchdowns. So beautiful! Condolences to all his family and I imagine he looks exactly like he did back then as he has made his way home.
