of Timbo, AR

July 16, 1927 - October 29, 2016

JAMES CARBIN GAMMILL, 89, of Timbo, Arkansas passed away on Saturday, October 29, 2016. Carbin was a devoted husband, father, Papa, brother, uncle and best friend.

Carbin was born on July 16, 1927 in Timbo, Arkansas to the late George W. and Claudia Gammill. He married the love of his life, Lillie Balentine, on January 19, 1946, sharing their lives together for 67 years. They raised two children of their own and fed many young people at their table. He was a veteran of the United States Army where he served his country in World War II.

Carbin was one of those unique men who found true happiness in any work he did. His first job outside the home was when he worked for the Schoolmaster at the old Fairview Schoolhouse. He built the fire before the students arrived, then swept and cleaned up after school, receiving ten cents a day for his labor. He never backed up from anything; plowing, haying, cleaning chicken houses, building houses and barns, delivering sand to masons in the area, working on vehicles, picking cotton and berries, finishing sheetrock, working on paving highway 66 for $1.10 an hour, driving the school bus for many years for Timbo School, doing grader work, sprigging bermuda grass and raising cattle. You name it, he could, and would, do it, anything to provide for his family. He lived through great changes in our country, from driving a wagon and team and plowing with mules to the newest equipment used today.

Carbin was always ready to lend an encouraging word and a helping hand to anyone in need and proved over the years to be a true friend and neighbor to all. He will be greatly missed by his loving family, friends and neighbors.

Carbin is survived by one son, Larry Gammill and wife Sylvia of Timbo, Arkansas; one daughter Kimberly Morrison and husband Richard of Timbo, Arkansas; three grandchildren, Larry James Gammill and wife Carrie, Ladeanna Strutton and husband Shawn, and Destin Morrison; six great-grandchildren, Samaya, Kamayka, and Jacob Strutton, Kyler and Kolton Gammill, and Emily Gammill.

Carbin was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Lillie B. (Balentine) Gammill; parents, George W. and Claudia Gammill; grandson, Dean Gammill; three brothers, Coy, Earl, and Roy Gammill; two sisters, Zelda Bullard and Elva Williams; and five half-brothers, and two half-sisters.

A visitation will take place on Wednesday, November 2, 2016, from 6-8PM at Roller Coffman Chapel in Mountain View, Arkansas. Funeral services will take place on Thursday, November 3, 2016, 10:00AM at Bethany Missionary Baptist Church in Onia, Arkansas with Brother Gary Don Fletcher and Brother Junior Barham officiating. Interment will follow the service at Pordue Cemetery in Onia, Arkansas.

There are so many memories of Uncle Carbin from my growing up years. We would visit in their home, and they ours and there were a few times I would sleep over at their house and ride the bus to school. He had a wonderful wit and helpful way. Prayers for the family for comfort and peace. He will be missed by many.
