Nellie Jene Griffin

of Marshall, AR

October 19, 1927 - October 2, 2017

Nellie Jene (Woodwarth) Griffin, age 89 of Marshall, Arkansas passed away on Monday, October 2nd, 2017 in Marshall. Nellie was the daughter of the late Ervin Alonzo and Daisy Elizabeth (Finch) Woodwarth. Nellie was born at Shilo near Leslie, Arkansas in Searcy County on October 19th, 1927. She married Audie Rudolph ''Dolph'' Griffin on December 8th, 1945 at Marshall, Arkansas. They were married 61 years and had eight children.

Nellie was of the Missionary Baptist faith. She professed her faith in Christ and was saved at the age of thirteen. She worked for 22 years in the dietary department at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital in Lincoln, Illinois from 1967 until her retirement in 1989. After retirement she and ''Dolph'' moved back home to Marshall, Arkansas. Nellie's husband, children, family and friends were always top priority in her life. She always put the needs of others before her own. In the past few years, Nellie had a knack for remembering and often shared many stories and memories of Searcy County with her family and friends. She was a self-proclaimed historian about Searcy County and its residents. Her passion was quilting and she would often say ''quilting is my therapy''. In addition to quilting, she loved old time bluegrass music, fishing, nature, gardening and her flowers. Nellie had wonderful neighbors and ''stranger'' was not a word in her vocabulary. She was loved by all who knew her and even those she shared brief conversations with. Nellie will be missed for her love, wisdom, kindness and compassion.

Survivors include two sons, Audie R. Griffin and wife Delora and Jerry L. Griffin, both of Lincoln, IL; three daughters, Linda K. Carver of Harrison, Marica D. Smith of IL and Kathleen Gillum of Marshall; fourteen grandchildren; thirty-two great grandchildren; eighteen great-great grandchildren; two sisters, Betty Morris of Shelbyville, IL and Ann Reynolds and husband Raymond of Sullivan, IL; several nieces and nephews; and a wonderful extended family including, Hollie (John) Kemp and Hona Hensley, both of Marshall and Carol Combs (late husband, John) of Lincoln, IL.

Nellie is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Audie ''Dolph'' Griffin; three daughters, Barbara N. Willet, Mary Ann Britton and Caroline S. Griffin; three grandchildren; two sisters; three brothers; three sons-in-law, Wayne Smith, Donald Gillum and Cecil Willet; and several nieces and nephews.

Arrangements are by Roller-Coffman Funeral Home in Marshall, Arkansas. Funeral services for Nellie will be 11:00 AM Saturday, October 7th, 2017 at South Mountain Freewill Baptist Church in Marshall, Arkansas with Bro. Roy Ragland officiating. Visitation will be 10:00 AM at the church one hour preceding the service. Burial will be in Rambo Cemetery. Family will serve as pallbearers. At the family's request in lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Rambo Cemetery Fund at Simmons Bank in Marshall. The family wishes to extend their sincere appreciation to all whom loved their mother, Nellie Griffin and those who made her life joyous.
