Roe Harrison DeVore

of Lyons, IN

October 13, 1923 - March 6, 2014

Roe Harrison DeVore Jr. (Junior to his family and close friends) departed this life peacefully at his home in Lyons, Indiana, on March 6, 2014. He was 90 years old. He was born October 13, 1923, to Roe Harrison DeVore and Bessie Dunham DeVore in Lawrence County near Egypt, Arkansas.

Growing up in Jackson County, Arkansas, he came of age during the Great Depression, and after completing the sixth grade, he went to work full time at the age of 12 as a farm laborer, picking cotton for fifty cents a day. In 1940 he doubled his wages when he went to Iowa to work for the Civilian Conservation Corps, and remained employed there for two years. Upon returning to Arkansas he worked in a variety of fields as a farm hand, a Mississippi River boatman, a carpenter, and a cotton ginner. In 1958 he gave his heart to the Lord, and surrendered to the ministry as a full time preacher in 1960. Over the years he pastored churches in Swifton, Leslie, Salem, Dripping Springs near Judsonia, Black Oak, Rock Creek near Marshall, and Jasper all in Arkansas as well as Greenfield and Cambridge City in Indiana.

His favorite pastimes were reading and studying the Bible, fishing, gardening, watching baseball, singing and playing music, and spending time with his beloved family and friends. In 1989 he received statewide recognition from Gov. Bill Clinton for his volunteerism in nursing homes where he volunteered his time singing and serving as an unofficial chaplain to patients in area nursing homes. Since his passing, friends have most often reflected upon his ministry, singing, love, laughter, and kind regard to people as individuals.

On May 22, 1943, Roe DeVore married Effie Hardin, a young lady he had known since childhood, and to this union were born three sons Roe Paul, Wesley Monroe, and James Harold, who died in infancy. Effie passed away in 1988, and in 1989 he married Bonnie Villines.

He was preceded in death by his wives Effie Hardin DeVore and Bonnie Villines DeVore, one son James Harold DeVore, a brother Frank DeVore, and a sister Hannah Hennessee.

Survivors include two sons, Paul DeVore (and wife Jolene) of Pottsville, Arkansas, and Wes DeVore (and wife Florence) of Indianapolis, Indiana; three step-daughters, Jerlene Bryant of Harrison, Arkansas, Hilda Moon (and husband Bob) of Gentry, Arkansas, and Dixie Burks (and husband Arlis) of Alpena, Arkansas. four grandchildren, Janet Carter, Anthony DeVore, Jason DeVore, and Paulina DeVore, five great-grandchildren, Tyler Carter, Sierra Carter, Bethany DeVore, Brooke DeVore, and Beau DeVore; two brothers, Hugh Dudley DeVore of Nederland, Texas and Gerald DeVore of Lyons, Indiana; three sisters, Syble Golden, Helen Rose, and Anna Ruth Hendrix all of Rockville, Indiana, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins, and a host of friends.

Opportunities to pay final respects will include visitation on Sunday (March 9) 4-8 PM at the Assembly of God in Lyons, Indiana and visitation on Tuesday (March 11) 6-8 PM at the Roller-Coffman Funeral Home in Marshall, Arkansas. Funeral services will be at 10 AM on Wednesday. March 12, at the Roller-Coffman Funeral Chapel in Marshall, Arkansas. Burial will be in the Nubbin Hill Cemetery near Leslie, Arkansas.

Pallbearers are Arlis Burks, Jason Carter, Jimmy Keys, Kenneth Rains, Mike Treat, and Phillip Treat.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Aged Ministers Assistance, General Council of the Assemblies of God, 1445 North Boonville Ave., Springfield, Missouri 65802-1894 or Gideons International, PO Box 140800, Nashville, Tennessee 37214-0800.

A true friend I have lost. Enjoyed our friendship so much. I don't know much about music but all I know I owe to him. He taught me to cord a guitar and how to tell what key a song was written in when I lead singing. A wise man with a heart larger than his grin. A true friend that I miss but I know that you are where you told me you wanted to be ~ maybe even a keeper of the door?

To the Devore family, I was so sorry to hear of the passing of Bro.Devore. My late husband Buford was one of his dearest friends when we lived in Lawrence Co. He called him affectionately Little Butterball. He held several revivals for us when our pastor Silas Scott was at Hopewell Assembly until his passing. We had he and your mom in our home during one revival. We loved them so much and now they are all in Heaven together once again. May God richly bless you all during this time.

I will always remember what a wonderful Father in-law I had. I feel so blessed to have married in the Family. We had such great times enjoying the talents and great humor. (still makes me smile)
He enjoyed his grandchildren, great grandchildren and was so kind to everyone.
Dad will be missed, but Heaven is much richer and sweeter.
I believe Grandpa will be the keeper of the door.
Grandpa and our Dad have just changed locations.
We love you.
Florence

Uncle Junior's belief in God, family, and friends made him one beloved man. He had a smile for everyone. I don't remember Uncle Junior every saying something bad about anyone. I was away at school or teaching and did not get to spend very much time with him in my adult years, but I certainly remember that smile. He and Aunt Effie enjoyed many years together before her demise.

Have a good rest, Uncle Junior. You have earned it.

We have fond memories of the Devore Family when they pastored Swifton 1st and we pastored Murphy Chapel.

They were always good friends to us, as we were first time pastors.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Paul and Wesley and their families.

So many childhood memories of. Bro. Devore and Sis Effie. Always enjoyed hearing them sing and Bro. Devore preaching. He could keep you entertained during his preaching with his stories. The last time he came by Swifton he blessed our hearts listening to him once again sing for The Lord.

Altho we didn't know Bro Devore very long, we counted him as a dear friend. Such a wonderful personality and devoted Christian man. We still have his dog Bowser whom he never failed to ask about when we saw him. We agreed we must have picked on the same cotton row back around Tuckerman and Newport. He also always mentioned the picture we gave him 0f a cotton patch with pickers weighing in when we saw him. I know you will miss as will many, many others including us. Must have been a great reunion in Heaven.
