February 8, 2018
Dr. Maxwell G. Cheney, 84, of Mountain Home, Arkansas, passed away Thursday, February 8, 2018. He was born in Calico Rock, Arkansas, on May 20, 1933, to James Orville and Alma M. (Gillihan) Cheney.
Dr. Max Cheney was a well-known physician in Mountain Home for over 52 years. He was very instrumental in improving health care here in Mountain Home. Some of his accomplishments include starting the second medical clinic in Mountain Home, starting a renal dialysis unit, placing the first pacemaker at Baxter Regional Medical Center, serving as Chief of Staff several times at BRMC and most recently being honored by the Mountain Home Education Foundation for his dedicated community service to the sports program. Dr. Cheney enjoyed hunting, especially bow-hunting, and was an avid skeet shooter.
Dr. Cheney is survived by his wife, Joan Marie Cheney of the home; three sons, Mark Cheney of Mountain Home, Max Cheney, Jr. of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, Andy Cheney and wife Nicole of High Ridge, Missouri; one daughter, Dr. Lori Cheney and husband Jay Sabella of Mountain Home; and five grandchildren, Jacob Cheney, Kylee Sabella, Cayden Sabella, Zack Wilson and Abigail Cheney. He is preceded in death by his parents.
A visitation will be held from noon-9:00 p.m. with family receiving friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Friday, February 16, 2018, at Roller Funeral Home Chapel. A private service will follow on Saturday. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Donald W. Reynolds Library, Joyce Cook Memorial Scholarship Fund at Cumberland Presbyterian Church or the Mountain Home Christian Clinic.
I was researching doctors and the best doctor I ever had came to mind, Dr Maxwell Chaney. I looked him up and was sad to learn he had passed away. Dr Chaney always had time to spend with his patients and learn everything he could about them. The best thing I remember about him was the time he spent with his patients. I laughed about it but it was also one of the best things about him. His nurses would have me call to see how far behind he was running so I would have not have to wait and the waiting room a long time. I thought that was great, because he also had the time to spend with me at my appointments. I hope Dr Lori follows in her dad's footsteps. I know longer live in Mountain Home, but I know he was sorely missed by everyone who knew him.
Before my mother died, Dr Cheney took the time to explain what we would be facing in the months ahead. I remember sharing with him that my mother had peace and was ready to go home to heaven. Mom’s favorite hymn was Great is Thy Faithfulness. Dr Cheney shared that his was An Evening Prayer. Reading the words of this song helped me to understand his motivation to serve others: “If I have wounded any soul today, If I have caused ones foot to go astray, If I have walked in my own willful way, Dear Lord forgive...O guide me, love me and my keeper be Dear Lord, Amen.†Yes, your life testified that He did guide, love, and keep.
Dr Cheney was a friend and my doctor for many years. I always had the highest regard for his medical expertise. He will be missed .
Dr. Cheney, for the last time I will tell you....
"My name not Luli Lu!! My name Neilla Mae!"
The world was a better place with you in it.
Many years of being friends with his parents, and family have left me feeling blessed and sadden at the same time. AS a doctor he was never to busy to go that extra mile to comfort you. As a friend he was fun , happy, and always had an opinion about any subject. My heart is filled with love and prayers going out to the family. May God bless each of you now and in the days to come.
Dear Joan and family, we remember Dr. Cheney with much affection as a physician and friend. We share your grief along with his many friends in the Twin Lake community. Our prayers and love are with you.

Somehow Max Cheney was able to practice big time medicine while being the consummate country doctor. He loved it and we benefited from having the best of both worlds. And lest the rest of the world not know or forget, let us mention that Dr. Maxwell Cheney is a favorite son of Calico Rock.

Dr. Lori and family, so sorry for your loss. Dr. Max treated several members of my family back in the 70’s. The one thing that always stood out to me as a child was his warm smile. He spoke to people with respect and honesty and always took the time to LISTEN. Many physicians of today could have learned a great deal from him, he was a good person, a good man.
