Dr. Hubert Lawrence Cockrum, 64, of Mountain Home, passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends on September 20, 2015, in Little Rock, Arkansas after battling long term surgical complications. A visitation will be Wednesday from Noon until 9:00 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 6:00 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Entombment will be in Baxter Memorial Gardens.
He was a loving husband for 46 years and an outstanding father, grandfather, optometrist and friend to many.
He was well known to his community of Mountain Home as ''Doc'' where he practiced Optometry since 1977. He enjoyed being at work every day because his patients were his friends. He was a very generous and caring person. He enjoyed fellowship time with family and friends, fishing, reading and ''eating a little something sweet.'' He especially loved his wife ''Chickadee''. He loved fishing with his son and traveling to Sherwood to see his daughter and grandchildren. He was always seen in the stands of Brandon's, his grandson, baseball and football games. He was also seen cheering for his granddaughter, Savannah in pageants. He loved traveling especially with friends, Nickki and Todd Golden, his sister and brother in law. He loved music and even played bass Guitar at one point in his life.
He was born November 18, 1950. He graduated from Monette High School, Arkansas State University. He then taught chemistry before attending Southern College of Optometry where he became a Doctor of Optometry. He worked with Dr. Jim Welborn when he and his family arrived in Mountain Home in 1977. He then opened Cockrum Vision Center when he worked until the summer of 2015 when he became ill. He has traveled for a mission trip to Costa Rica. He has been a member of the Lions Club, Arkansas Optometric Association and American Optometric Association. He was involved in several businesses throughout his life including The Casual Palace, The Blu Pig Restaurant and The Outpost Complex.
He will continue to be loved and left behind by many. He is survived by his wife Janette of Mountain Home, 2 children Holly Cockrum Nelson of Sherwood and Lance Cockrum of Mountain Home, his mother Billie Jean Cockrum of Mountain Home, a sister Jan Cockrum, a brother Jim Cockrum, 2 grandchildren Brandon and Savannah Nelson and numerous other relatives. He is preceded in death by Jim Cockrum, his father.
I currently live in England, so I only just learned of Dr. Cockrum's passing. He was my eye doctor for nearly 30 years, from the time I was 14 until the last time I was home in 2014. I am truly saddened to hear about his death. My condolences to his family.
Dr. Cockrum, was a gentle man that always had a heart for "my" special education kids. He offered free services to their families and free glasses for the children. Never wanting or expecting any monetary reward. The students would always write him a thank you card that he proudly displayed. Never too busy to listen. Always willing to help. I just learned of his passing today. So sorry for your loss and the lose to the community.
