37 years ago I met, fell in love and married Alan Patrick Porbeck. We were as different as any two people could be...The first time we met he was wearing neatly pressed bell bottom pants, a starched white dress shirt - unbuttoned low enough to reveal a thick gold chain...me I was barefoot, in ripped jeans, a flannel shirt and wet hair. I was surprised when he asked for my phone number and even more surprised when I came home from work the following day and found out he had called. I called him back and he said he wanted to get together but he was at his Aunt Helen's birthday party (that alone endeared him to my heart)...could we make it the following day. We did and spent every moment we could together after a first lovely dinner and walk out at Maumelle Park where we talked and laughed for hours as I picked four leaf clovers - of which I had up until the house fire.
Alan gave me many wonderful gifts throughout our life together. First, Alan gave me his love. Then Alan gave me his family...each member of his Family opened their hearts to me over time and has been my rock and salvation throughout this tragic and heartbreaking loss. He gave me 2 beautiful boys that fill my heart with so much love and through them I have received the love of 2 wonderful women and 5 precious grandchildren. Alan gave me the gift of wonderful friendships that will last a lifetime. For all these things I am so very grateful and I will forever cherish these gifts and the man that gave them to me.

To Glenda and the boys I send my deepest sympathy on your loss; your brothers and sisters-in-law are also in my thoughts on this sad day. Please know that I would be with on Friday if it were in any way possible, but I am stuck at home for another two weeks after having foot surgery mid-July.

Alan was so good to me when I had small printing needs at a couple of different jobs. And he always brightened my life when we were together. My heart is with all of you even though I cannot be.

My Heart goes out to the family and friends of Alan. When I remember him I will automatically see that big smile. He was a willingly participant in our crazy Halloween costume parties, he was a willing helper as well. He printed Cody and Brook's wedding invitations as a gift of course, and he spent the day bar tending our "Harry Potter" themed beverage tent. He had a greeting and smile for everyone. Grief is it's own thing that requires a specific process, time and style personalized for each person going through it. I send my sympathies and encouragement for a timely process with only happy memories left behind.

I am devastated by the loss of Alan. I really loved him and he supported me so much when I desperately needed it. He sacrificed for his family, even those of us who married into it. When David and I got divorced, he was there for me with compassion and understanding and not an ounce of judgement.

If there's one thing I remember about Alan Porbeck it's that he never stopped talking lol. He was always telling corny jokes and trying to laugh when things got rough. I used to make fun of his overalls and tell him he walked around like he was going fishing every night. He'd say "what? These are comfortable!" He always had a bag of candy in the fridge and both TVs going in his study. I'd ask him why do you need two televisions?! He'd say "I don't want to miss anything!" He adored his grandbabies and when Finn was born he was a total baby hog. He said "listen to how well he can breathe, when Mason was born he snorted all the time." He was a big worrier and he'd always cry when Finn had to leave to go home. He'd tell me that Finn loved how loud PawPaw's heart beat and how warm he was because Finn would always sleep like a log on Alan's chest. We used to have an understanding with each other as fellow Capricorns that both of us always had to be right. He'd say "you know me, I'm always right!" I also told him he was the most lovable asshole I've ever met haha. When David and I got engaged he and Glennda opened the door with sunglasses on as a joke that my ring was so sparkly they would need them. I loved him so very much and I haven't stopped crying since I found out.

He was obsessed with his cat, almost to the point where it was comically endearing. It drove Glennda nuts lol. Freddy had his own little box right next to Alan while he watched TV. That cat loved him and he loved his cat. He had such a bond with children and animals. He was perceived sometimes as a blunt person but his heart was that of a big softie. He struggled to be understood sometimes and children and his animals loved him for just who he was. That's what Alan was to me, a big teddy bear who gave the best hugs ever.

I love you, I miss you, I'll miss your stupid jokes and I hope you're up there making Jesus laugh with your silly stories and ridiculous jokes. All our love.

-Faye and Finn

Dear Uncle Al,
We lost you too soon. I am forever grateful for the time we got to spend together and the many memories I will remember and cherish.

You always loved telling jokes, duck hunting, and golf. I will always remember one of your famous sayings; “If you have some ham you can have some ham and eggs, if you have some eggs.” When you got your first black Chevy Silverado, you told me it was like Christmas every morning. I got a similar style truck shortly after and remember that thought every time I get in my truck in the morning. On the golf course, you were the only person I’ve ever seen intentionally slice your putts, and make it work!

Every time we got ready to walk into the duck field you were the first one to recall the weather report for the wind conditions and suggest which way to orientate the pit blind bench. As hunters and golfers are the eternal optimists, I always enjoyed our email sign-offs as we all planned for the upcoming hunt. You were very fond of your Stoeger shotgun, and had your signature sign-off: “Don't go to Kroger. I Got the Stoeger”

Every year you, Jason, Rob, and myself played in the annual Monsignor George Tribou Memorial Golf Tournament. We were one of only two teams I can remember where all (4) team members were from the same family. It was special to see our foursome listed as Porbeck, Porbeck, Porbeck, and Porbeck. After many close finishes and unlucky tie-breaker losses, we finally broke through this year and won first place in our flight. I am so grateful to have shared this victory with you and we know you’ll be shaping some shots for us as we attempt to retain the title in the years to come.

You will always be remembered and forever in our hearts. Rest in Peace.

Frank, Rob, and the entire Porbeck family, so sorry to read of Alan's passing today. Like a golfer, he would "grind" in the print business for years and am happy to say we worked together a number of times over that period. He always took care of me and his many other print customers like a pro. I appreciated that great smile and joking attitude (reminded me of Frank, Sr.) I bet he's already gotten in a great round of golf with your Dad and had a nice visit with your Mother by now. Peace be with your families at this tough time.

Alan was a pleasure to deal with as a vendor of ours at AFCO Steel. He did a great job with everything I ordered. I enjoyed our visits every time he came to my office and have missed him since our last one, months ago. He enjoyed bragging on his grandchildren and showing me pictures. I sure enjoyed seeing them. Proud grandpa! I'm thankful for everything Alan did and hope we can find another person just as good to take care of our printing needs. I understand he has many friends here and I know he'll be missed. Praying for family and friends in this difficult time.
