Patricia P. (Pat) Sipes

August 29, 1926 - May 18, 2017

Patricia P. (Pat) Sipes, R.N., died peacefully May 18, 2017, in Little Rock, Arkansas. She was born August 29, 1926, in Goshen, Indiana, to the late Howard E. and Mildred O. Payne. She was also preceded in death by her loving husband of 58 years, Dr. Frank M. Sipes, Sr., her beloved son, Frank M. Sipes, Jr., brother, John O. Payne, and nephew, Douglas J. Payne. She is survived by her children, Steve Sipes (Gayle), Susan Freeman, and Melissa Owens (Tom). Additional survivors include grandchildren Aaron and Will Freeman, Sara Ross (Brady), Zack, Jake and Max Owens, Dana Leonard (Shelley), Dr. Laura Adams (Ty), Sara Berryman (Will); great-grandchildren Gage and Jesse Leonard, Mackenzie, Harrison and Everson Adams, Mattie and Thatcher Berryman, and 2 year old Tucker Ross, who blew kisses to his great-grandmother during a visit three weeks ago; niece, Sherron Shuffield; sisters-in-law Ruth Rizzo (Vic) and Mrs. J. Clark (Margaret) Hensley; and three nephews, David Payne, Clark Hensley, Jr., and Dana Hensley.

Following the death of her father in 1936, Pat, her mother and brother resided with her grandparents in their home on brick paved 6th street in Goshen, nicknamed the ''Maple City''. During her high school years in the early 1940's, Pat worked in a local industrial firm engaged in the manufacture of military airplane components. She very much enjoyed music and played percussion in her high school band. She attended Goshen College before commencing nursing studies at the Northwestern University Wesley School of Nursing in Chicago, Illinois, where she earned her R.N. degree. While there, she met and later married Little Rock native Frank M. Sipes, a student at Northwestern Medical School, on June 6, 1948. Pat's nursing school roommate married Frank's medical school roommate, culminating in a lifelong friendship between the two couples.

The couple lived in a number of locations while Frank continued his medical training and served as a Navy physician during the Korean conflict. Pat traveled with her husband to Little Rock in 1953 when he commenced a surgery residency at the University of Arkansas Medical School. She worked as a nurse at the old Baptist Hospital until the birth of the couple's third child. During her husband's tenure as chief of surgery at the Fort Roots VA hospital, she joined the Fort Roots Ladies club and enjoyed the friendships made for fifty plus years. After the children reached adulthood, she returned to the field of nursing by assisting in her husband's private medical practice.

Pat was a long time member of Pulaski Heights Baptist Church, pastored years ago by her late father-in-law, Dr. L. M. Sipes. She very much enjoyed the friendship of her Sunday school class and assisting with Lord's Supper services, reflective of her life of quiet service to others. While still able to remember to do so, she faithfully read her bedside bible after retiring for the evening.

Patty, as her husband called her, Mom, as her children called her, Grandmother, as her grandchildren called her, Grandma Sipes, as her great-grandchildren called her, and Pat, as other family and friends called her, dearly loved and was dearly loved by her family. She was a family vacation planner extraordinaire, avid puzzle solver, enjoyed the family game golf, and was a wonderful cook, hosting many, many family holiday gatherings. She took up regular walking and jogging in her later years and participated in a number of 5k and 10k road races. . Mom and Dad's love of music played no small role in influencing their three younger children to become accomplished musicians, while their eldest son was content just to listen.

Funeral Services include visitation at 6:00 p.m., Sunday, May 21st, at Roller Chenal Funeral Home, 13801 Chenal Parkway, Little Rock, with a memorial service led by Rev. Jim Munns, at 10:00 a.m., Monday, May 22nd, at Pulaski Heights Baptist Church, 2200 Kavanaugh Blvd., Little Rock.

Special thanks to the kind and caring staff at Hickory Heights Health and Rehab and Arkansas Hospice, to all of her ''Secret Pals' at the Church, and to church member David Cato, who always remembered her on her birthday and special holidays.

Memorials may be made to Pulaski Heights Baptist Church or to a charity of one's choice.

Dear Susan and family,
I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your mother. I remember her as a beautiful and gracious woman who was always kind and hospitable. I know that each of you will miss her dearly. It is so beautiful though how the gifting, love and characteristics of one passes on to the future generations. What I know of you Susan, your brothers and sister is a continuation of the tender heart and kindness of your parents. Yours is a beautiful family that carries on the call of love and truth that God put into your heart to give to the earth and mankind.

Love Sana
