Fred Elam

of Little Rock, AR

April 23, 1941 - July 1, 2015

Fred Harris Elam, 74, of Little Rock, Arkansas, passed away, Wednesday, July 1, 2015 at his home.

Fred was born on Wednesday, April 23, 1941 in Memphis, TN to Karl & Jessie Mae James Elam. He graduated from Whitehaven High School in 1959, and entered the United States Navy in June of the same year where he served his country until his honorable discharge in 1963. He then attended Southern Baptist College in Walnut Ridge, AR and served as music and youth pastor at a local church during his time there. On June 8, 1974, he married Laveda Faye Cullum of Little Rock.

Fred was gifted with a beautiful tenor voice and musical ability with which he enjoyed singing old hymns and playing guitar. He sang in several quartets including the Southernaires in college and the Spokesmen quartet at his church in Mountain Home, AR. Poetry was one of his passions, which he began to pursue as a young boy and continued throughout his service overseas and up until his last years. He enjoyed taking long walks with Laveda and being outdoors, especially if it was on the open water. Fred was a passionate Razorback football fan and rarely missed watching a game. However, of all these there is nothing he loved more than spending time with his family and grandchildren.

Fred is survived by his wife Laveda of Little Rock; his son, Jason Elam and his wife Robin of Clinton, MS; his stepdaughters, Sherry Fenton of Houston, TX and Lisa Smart and her husband Daniel of Morris, OK; two brothers, James Karl and his wife, Jean, of Tyler, TX and Robert (Bub) Eldon and his wife, Ginger, of Mountain Home, AR; grandchildren include Sam and Rachel Elam, Will Fenton, Jacqueline Kelsey, Michael, Julie and Jessie Morton and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Karl Kirby & Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Hiett.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Monday, July 6, 2015 at Roller-Chenal Funeral Home, 13801 Chenal Parkway, 501-224-8300. Visitation will be prior to the service from 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M., at the funeral home.

Laveda and Jason, we were so sorry to hear about Fred's passing.

Fred was one of the nicest men we knew. We can't remember a time when he didn't have a smile on his face, and he never met a stranger.

We have and will continue to pray for you during this time.

Fred worked with us and was always a wonderful spirit and happy no matter the situation. We could always count on Fred to have the snacks (LOL) and keep us smiling. It is a great loss for our company and us as individuals. We are saddened by his passing and I am sure many of our tenants will miss him and the wonderful conversation; Because he LOVED to talk. Please know your family is in our prayers and our condolences are with you. If there is ANYTHING we can do, please don't hesitate to call!!

Love,

Fred's Family @ AA Storage

Fred was such a great man and was very much like a grandpa figure to me. I worked with him for many years at Flake Wilkerson and we talked a LOT. My husband also knew him well. We are so saddened by this loss. We are sending our love, prayers and support to the family.
