Freda Fern Savage

of Conway, AR

February 16, 1931 - February 17, 2017

Freda Fern Savage was born February 16, 1931, and never one to miss a party, departed this life February 17, 2017. Freda was born in Blanchard, Oklahoma, in the midst of the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl. One of ten children, she grew up the daughter of proud and resilient share-croppers. As such, she developed an unparalleled work ethic, which would support her children and family for decades. A proud Oklahoman she enjoyed singing and singing loudly, managing affairs at Rancho Village Baptist Church, traveling to every state except for the two that had nothing to see, wearing fancy church hats, and collecting toothpick holders.

She was an magnificent cook, making the best fried chicken, fried pies, waffles, chocolate cake and mac and cheese. She was an avid gardener, growing the biggest tomatoes and prettiest flowers that could be coaxed from the dry Oklahoma soil.

An ageless and incredible grandmother (she still had the skin of a 20 year old), she was never too busy for a game of skip-bo, teaching her granddaughters how to can green beans or put up grape jelly, or color and hunt Easter eggs.

In 1977 she met her prince charming when Coy Savage paid someone to wait on her tables for her so she could dance with him. They danced together for the next 33 blissful years, and are reunited in Christ to dance through eternity.

She is survived by her daughter Cheryl (Ryder) Hatfield and John Ryder, and a multitude of loving grandchildren and great grandchildren. The family extends their most sincere thanks to Bonnie and Ed at Salem Place Nursing Facility, who filled her last four years with joy.

Graveside Service will be Tuesday February 21, 2017 at 2:00 at Sunset Memorial Park in Norman, Oklahoma.

Your mother and grandmother sounds like such a lovely person! We are sorry we never had the chance to meet her. Our thoughts and condolences are with your family during this difficult time. Our family has always found comfort in the Bible's promise at Revelation 21:3,4 which says that soon death, tears and sorrow will be no more. We look forward to the time when we can see our loved ones again!

We met Miss Freda at Salem Place when we came to visit one of our church members, Loretta Hill, who was Miss Fred's roommate at the time. What a wonderful woman! She has blessed our hearts each month as we came to hold a service every 3rd Sunday. She was there with her hat on every time. We will miss her but we know that she is with the Lord. Thank you for your beautiful obituary. We pray that God comfort your family.
