of Shirley, AR

April 13, 1951 - July 24, 2016

We said farewell today to Douglas Mark Hawbaker, on July 24, 2016. He had a strong and fierce battle that finally came to a close. We are thankful that his peace has come.

Doug was born in Des Moines, Iowa on April 13, 1951. He resided in Polk City, Iowa and attended school at North Polk School. At the age of 16, his family moved to Tampa, Florida where Douglas would graduate from Leto High School and then join and serve in the United States Navy, where he served a tour in the Vietnam War. When he returned he met his wife, Sharon, in 1972.

Doug and Sharon married in January of 1974. They became parents to two daughters, Jodie Michelle and Julie Denae. Doug moved his family to Conway, Arkansas in 1991, for a job as a machinist at Union Pacific Railroad. He retired from the railroad at the age of 60. His favorite memories were always of his daughters and later on it was truly his grandchildren.

He will be missed by all who loved him. Especially by his wife of 43 years, Sharon.

He is survived by his, wife, Sharon; two daughters, Jodie Tipton and Julie McSpadden; his mother, JoAnn Hawbaker of Denver, Colorado; two brothers, Dan Hawbaker of Denver, Colorado, David Hawbaker of Des Moines, Iowa; six grandchildren, Kyler Jace Tipton, age 20, Lathan Kade Tipton, age 17, Alex Rylan Tipton age 16, Aaryn Gage Tipton, age 13, Emma Drue McSpadden, age 11, Ethan Douglas Hawbaker, age 18; plus many wonderful nieces and nephews across the United States.

Hawbaker family:
I would like to express my condolences to your family in this tough time. I had the pleasure of working with Doug at Union Pacific. He was friends with my father Terry Custer. Doug was a great man! One of my best memories of Doug would be at the time clock at work waiting to clock out( on his Friday). I'd be coming in on 2nd shift and he'd be leaving 1rst. He would have this big smile on his face ready to go home for the weekend. I'd ask him of his plans and if he had any he would then tell me and I would tell him to enjoy himself! Just friendly small talk was all it was but something i remember doing with Doug almost daily! He'd be in his BOAT SHOES! Inside joke! I won't forget his laugh either! He was a good machinist and my dad enjoyed working with him over the years!
Sorry for your family's loss! Just remember each day that passes is one day sooner to when you will see each other again! RIP DOUG!!!!!
