Gladys Jean Barnes

of Timbo, AR

December 11, 1938 - November 27, 2014

Gladys Jean (Hines) Barnes of Timbo, born December 11, 1938, in Newnata, Arkansas, passed away on November 27, 2014, at the age of 75. She was an active member of Timbo Landmark Missionary Baptist Church, where she played piano. Jean loved her family, friends and her beloved dog, Bear. Her passions in life were music, church, and going to thrift stores. She was fortunate to have incorporated her passion into her career as a public school music teacher. She began her teaching career in 1974 at Flippin High School in Flippin, Arkansas. She shared her love of music with many children and directed her students in productions such as Peter Rabbit; You're A Good, Man Charlie Brown; and Bye, Bye Birdie. She also taught at Clinton, St. Joseph Catholic School in Conway, Cotton Plant, and Mount Vernon-Enola. She loved to perform at the Hootenanny at the Stone County Courthouse years ago. Throughout the years, she performed at the Ozark Folk Center and eagerly joined in impromptu music around the Stone County Courthouse square, the Driftwood Barn, senior citizen centers, church revivals, and the Mountain View Gospel Opry. It was at the Opry on Thanksgiving Day where she performed ''You'll Never Walk Alone'' prior to collapsing from the piano bench, never to recover. She was surrounded by friends and embracing her passions at the time of her unexpected death. Jean celebrated life and shared it with family and her ever-growing circle of friends. Because of her, we will never walk alone, and she will never leave our hearts.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Mary Hines of Newnata. She is survived by her daughters: Deanna Younger of Carlsbad, New Mexico; Lisa Davis and husband Jackie of Bergman, Arkansas; Melissa Schubert of Batesville, Arkansas; and son, David Barnes of Wamego, Kansas. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Cody Passmore, Garrett Passmore, Jennifer Barnes, Richard Barnes, Stephanie Barnes, Leslie Barnes, Will Davis, Josh Davis, Victor Schubert, and Jackson Schubert. "Granny Jean" also had five great-grandchildren: Abbi Barnes, Natalie Barnes, David Barnes, Caleb Barnes, Marissa Barnes, and was eagerly awaiting the early December birth of her sixth great-grandchild, Evie Claire Passmore. Additional survivors are her sister, Ernestine Gulley of Mountain View, and nephews: Denver Gulley of Mountain Home, Arkansas, and Johnny Gulley of Midland, Texas.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, November 30, at Roller Coffman Funeral Home in Mountain View.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, December 1, at Timbo Landmark Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor Junior Barham and Brother Carl Freeman officiating. Jean will be laid to rest at Big Springs Cemetery in Newnata, next to family members.

Gladys Jean was my first cousin too. My husband, Hank always enjoyed playing music with her when we visited Arkansas. They are playing music together in one of the pictures in the slide show. We will miss her. We are praying for the family.

I am deeply sorry for your families loss. I have fond memories of her as my first music teacher at Flippin School. She was my favorite music teacher I had. I enjoyed her class so much. I hope God helps your family through this difficult time. God bless your family, Woodena Cranfill-Mays

How sad to lose one of our classmates from the Bay High School class of 1957. Gladys certainly lived her life to the fullest and I'm sure will be watching over all of the music programs she was so excited about.

The hours and hours we spend discussing Jehovah and what Jesus sacrifice meant to both of us will be cherished as long as I live. Jean and I both were born in 1938 and we loved the thrift store adventures. She brought me many treasures of a blouse here or a Kitty pin or things to show she always thought to do kind and thoughtful deeds for others. Many times we shared meals together. Hr family was always in her conversations as well as her friends. she loved and cared deeply. I never heard her complain about her health or any problems she faced. she lived well and loved deeply. I will miss you my dear friend and to the family..you can be proud of you Jean and what she stood for. Matthew 5.28 God promises we will see her again. I wait now for that wonderful promise to be granted.

Reading her obituary brings back so many memories, especially of the music programs at school. What a lot of fun she brought to so many of us with her love of music! I can still remember the lyrics to so many popular songs from the 70's because she incorporated them into our music classes. You can tell a lot about a person by the number of lives they have touched and her children can be proud of the legacy their Mother left to them. She always made us smile!

Jean Barnes loved music, naughty pranks, dessert, and- most of all- her family. So treasure those memories for she enriched our lives.

There's a bright new star in the heavens tonight, twinkling down from up above, but that isn't a star- that's just Jean's eyes beaming down on us all with love!

May the memories of her love and laughter ease your heart and enable you to smile again.
