of Marianna, AR
September 15, 1915 - October 3, 2007
Clyde B. Hogan, age 92, died peacefully in his sleep early Wednesday morning, October 3, 2007, at Crestpark Skilled Nursing facility in Marianna.
He was born September 15, 1915 in Conway to Lou Lancaster Hogan and Andrew Jackson Hogan and was the husband of the late Emma Leila Hawkins Hogan, and father of the late Martha Delura Hogan. Preceding him in death were his brothers, Doyne Hogan and Milburn ''Bo'' Hogan, of Conway and a sister, Audrey Hogan Warner of Marianna.
A graduate of Arkansas State Teachers' College in Conway, he later attended the University of Arkansas and got his master's degree at Oklahoma State University.
Mr. Hogan came to Marianna in 1938 to establish a vocational agriculture program at T.A. Futrall High School. He taught Agriculture, was the high school principal and later Assistant Superintendent of Transportation for the Lee County School District for more than 42 years where he was greatly revered by several generations of students who took from his classroom much more than the subject matter he taught so well.
Mr. Hogan was a member of the First Baptist Church in Marianna for nearly 70 years. He taught the Men's Sunday School Class, was a deacon and sang in the choir ''to fill a seat.''
He was a member of Rotary for more than 60 years, with 57 years of perfect attendance. He received the Paul Harris Fellowship Award for outstanding contributions to Rotary International. He organized and led the Marianna Red Cross blood drive for 25 years and received the Chamber of Commerce ''Citizen of the Year'' award in 1992.
He was a man of substance, an unselfish individual who had a genuine feeling for helping others. Especially those close to him understand how deeply he was loved and will be missed. His principles, sincerity and faith guided him well through life. His love, encouragement and gentle spirit touched many lives.
He is survived by daughter Rebecca Hogan of Marianna and eight nieces and nephews: Paula Smartt of Knoxville, Tennessee; Dottie Harris of Fayetteville; Bob Hogan of Conway; Turner Hogan of Denton, Texas; Lyda Washburn of Little Rock; Jeanne Johnson of Vancouver, Washington; Joey Moody of Russellville and Lynn Poole of Heber Springs. Additionally, he is survived by three special friends who visited him regularly: Loyd Oxner, who reminisced about the good ole days; Suzy Keasler, who brought him root beer shakes and Pat Audirsch who ''trimmed both the hairs on his bald head.''
The family will receive friends at Roller Funeral Home on Friday, October 5th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist Church in Marianna on Saturday, October 6, at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow with a graveside service at Crestlawn Memorial Park in Conway, Arkansas at 4:00 p.m. The family asks that the First Baptist Church, Rotary Club and Community Foundation of Lee County be considered for any memorial.
You helped me in so many ways Mr. Hogan.
I will never forget you.
Mr. Hogan was a wonderful man and an outstanding principal. He was a major reason that T.A. Futrall was such an exceptional school. One thing about Mr. Hogan I shall always remember is his agility. I'm sure my classmates recall how he could touch the top of the doorframe with his foot, either forwards or backwards. Amazing! He was also the father of a dear childhood friend, Martha Lou. I still have photos of her 4th or 5th birthday party. Martha Lou was such a sweet person too and we missed her at our recent reunion. My deepest sympathy to Becky and the rest of the family.
Dear Hogan Family, I am so sorry for the loss of your loved one. Many years ago I was a student at Marianna Schools. I remember Mr. Hogan so well, and although I was very young at the time, I remember how he cared for all of us. I remember feeling safe when Mr. Hogan was around, and I always held a deep respect for him. I am so glad that he lived a good long life. Bless you all, and Thank You Mr. Hogan.
I will forever remember this giant of a man. He taught us so much at T.A. Futrall. He was always there with a stern, yet gentle hand. The students that went through Futrall are all better beings for having known this wonderful man, that we called our principal. Becky, you are in our thoughts and your Father will always be in our hearts! Kathy
God bless you and your family, Mr. Hogan. May the Lord hold you ever so close.
Will miss you, but know you are in a better place, GOD BLESS
I got reacquainted with Mr. Hogan while visiting at the Crestpark Heritage home and I looked forward to visiting and reminiscing with him about our earlier years at Marianna and I will miss him and our conversations. Please accept our deepest sympathy. Joe&Susie Deaton
sorry to hear of the loss of a great man that was loved by a lot of folks including his students at T.A.FUTRALL he taught myself more than i will be able to pass on in my life time MR. HOGAN will be missed
When the doors of T. A. Futrall High School opened each day, Mr. Hogan was there to greet us and remind us just by his presence that each one of us had the responsibility to set goals and persevere until those goals were attained. We are better because he was there. The Clay Family benefitted greatly as a result of Mr. Hogan's willingness to dedicate so much of his time to us and many others who walked those halls. Our sympathy to you, Becky, and your extended family. Rose Clay Keusenkothen
Greatest high school principal ever. Made me do right and I am forever grateful.
Marianna will not be the same. First, as a teacher and then as a long-time pricipal, Mr. Hogan led generations of young people through T. A. Futrall High School. He became a friend and mentor to both my father and myself. Condolences to Becky and her extended family from the Johnsons and the whole roster of former Futrall students.
Mr Hogan had a very deep impact on my growing up years He is to be admired and looked up to as one of the finest principals in Arkansas. Peace be to the family Regards Von Vondran
Becky, May God comfort you at this time of loss. Mr. Hogan was a fine man.
Dear Hogan Family, I was fortunate enough to meet Mr. Hogan almost 14 years ago. I work with retired teachers in Arkansas in association with the Arkansas Retired Teachers Association. Mr. Hogan was a doll! We had a great visit that day and I have never forgotten it. When I saw his obituary in the paper today, I just had to write you. Heaven is rejoicing with the addition of Clyde Hogan! Mary Alice Hughes
Becky as I remember you by your father Mr Hogan will be greatly missed. I have thought of him over the years after high school. I went to see him on Our Class of '65 Birthday/reunion day. I felt that he remembered me. That felt good. Rest in peace you good kind gentleman. A former student Gary Shannon
Mr. Hogan planted a seed in all of us through out the years (generations) and none of us will ever forget him. He was truly a special person but was needed in a better place to do his work. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.
He was a real Christian friend to all of us and will surely be missed by all that knew him. He had a good influence on a lot of the young people growing up in Marianna.
Becky, Your dad was one of a kind. It was not until I got older that I realized how very special he was and what an influence he had on my life. A man of strong principals, very much like my father, he left a great legacy that will be passed on for generations yet to come. May God Bless you during this time. Having just been through the same loss I understand all that you are facing. In His Amazing Love, Bill Berry
All eight of the Foster children and our dad and mother thought of Mr. Hogan and his family as part of our family. Mr. Hogan's kindness will always be treasured by our family. The Marianna community and the world have benefitted by Mr. Hogan having been here. Our thoughts and prayers are with you, Rebecca. Thanks for sharing your dad. Jimmy Foster
Mr. Hogan was a very sweet and gracious man. I got to know him while working at the Moro School, then later he would come by Woodruff Electric with the Gideon group and I would get to visit with him. He always seemed like he was so happy and loved his family very much. My prayers will be with Becky and family. I know he will be greatly missed.
A giant of a man has fallen. A very dear friend and mentor of so many of us over the years. His heritage will continue for generations to come. I am so glad he was my friend. Words cannot adequately express our sympathy to the family and dear friends in the community of man. May God bless and keep this good family. Royce Pendergrass
Rest in Peace Mr. Hogan for you taught us all the good things about life.
